Transferring a job to SmartBench

This article explains how to transfer job files to SmartBench, either over a wifi connection or using a USB stick.

You can transfer files either by:

  • USB
  • WiFi

Transferring files using a USB stick

You will need a USB stick.

Plug your USB stick into a USB port on your computer.

Copy and paste, or click and drag your .gcode or .nc files into the folder for your USB stick.

Your USB stick might have a different name, maybe matching the brand that is written on it. If you are not sure, you can unplug it and plug it back in to see if a new name appears in your folder menu.

When the file has copied across, right click on the USB stick folder and select “Eject (Name of your USB Stick)”. Unplug your USB stick from your computer.

You will find the USB port on the right hand side of the console. Plug your USB stick into this port.

In the console menu, click on the “Pro” App.

Press the button with the folder icon in the top left of the screen.

The filechooser screen will come up.

It will take a moment for your console to load up the USB stick.

When the USB stick is connected, you will see a green banner at the top of the screen, and the USB stick button will glow orange.

Press the USB stick button.

You will see the files on your USB stick displayed in the filechooser.

Load your file into the SmartBench console by selecting it, and then pressing the tick button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Congratulations, you have transferred a file from your USB stick onto your SmartBench!

The filechooser will only display files with a .nc or .gcode extension

Transferring files using over your wifi network

You can send .nc and .gcode files directly to the console via your wifi network.

Setting up Filezilla for the first time

You will first need to download and install Filezilla FTP on your computer. Click here to go to the Filezilla website, and follow their instructions to download and install Filezilla on your computer.

You will need to find and note down your console’s IP address.

In the console menu, click on the “Pro” App.

If you are connected to a wifi network, you will see the IP address in the bottom left corner of the Pro App on your console.

It will look like 4 numbers, separated by full stops.

Open FileZilla on your computer.

You may have an icon that looks like this on your desktop, or in your application menu. Double click on it.

Open the Site Manager in FileZilla, by clicking on “File” in the top left corner, and then “Site Manager…” in the dropdown menu.

Click on “New site” on the left hand side of the popup.

A new site will be created in the folder “My Sites”. Give it a name. You might like to call it “YetiTool SmartBench”, or you can get creative.

On the right hand side of the popup, select the “General” tab.

Click on the drop down menu labelled “Protocol:”, and select “SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol” from the options.

Under the dropdown, enter the connection details.

In box A, “Host:” enter the IP address that you noted down from the console earlier.

Leave box B, “Port:”, blank.

Select the “Logon Type:” to be “Normal” if it is not already selected (box C).

Enter “pi” into box D for the “User:”, and “pi” into box E for the “Password:”

Click “Connect”.

Check the box that says “Update cached key for this host”, and click “Ok”.

A successful connection will display something like:

You are now ready to transfer your files!

Transferring files using FileZilla

When your connection has been set up, you will be able to see the file structures for your computer and your SmartBench console side-by-side.

Your local computer’s files and folders are displayed on the left.

Your SmartBench console is displayed on the right.

You will be transferring files from your computer to the console. Your console will look for .gcode and .nc files in a specific folder, so it is important to tell FileZilla which folder to use.

In the box that says “Local site:”, navigate to the folder where you have put your .nc or .gcode project files.

In the box that says “Remote site:”, navigate to the console’s “jobCache" folder.

You can do this either by clicking in the file tree, or copy and paste the following line into the “Remote site:” field:

/home/pi/easycut-smartbench/src/jobCache

You can now copy the file across.

You can drag any file from the file structure displayed on the left hand side of the FileZilla window into the jobCache folder on the right hand side.

You can also copy it from your normal file explorer programme, or your desktop, into the jobCache folder in FileZilla.

If the file transfer was successful, it should say “File transfer successful” in the status report at the top of the screen, and you will see your file displayed in the jobCache folder on the right hand side.

To see the files on your console, press the button with the folder icon in the top left of the screen.

You should now be able to see your transferred files appear in the filechooser on your console.

If they don’t appear straight away, just press the refresh button on the bottom of the console screen.

Congratulations, you can now transfer files wirelessly to your SmartBench!
